Common questions and tips from our work with Luray customers.
- What counts as light demolition?
- Light demolition covers smaller structures that can be taken apart by hand and with basic tools: wooden decks, garden sheds, fences, railings, playsets and similar builds. It also covers hauling the debris left from interior tear-outs. Larger jobs, such as removing load-bearing walls or whole buildings, usually need a licensed demolition contractor and heavy equipment. Call (443) 623-4488 to describe your project.
- Do I need a permit to tear down a shed?
- It depends on your county and the size of the structure. Many small sheds and decks can come down without a permit, but some localities want notice, especially if the structure has electrical service or sits near a property line. Check with your county building office before the job. If the shed or deck has wiring, have an electrician disconnect it first.
Tip
Empty and disconnect before teardown day
Clear everything out of a shed before it comes down, or list the contents so they can be hauled along with the lumber. Shut off and disconnect any power, water lines or hoses running to the structure. Move vehicles, planters and outdoor furniture away from the work area. Mark any buried lines, septic parts or sprinkler heads near the footprint.
Tip
Plan what goes in after the teardown
Think about the next step before the old deck or shed comes down. If you are building new, ask whether concrete footings or posts should stay in place or be pulled. If you want lawn or garden in that spot, plan to remove footings and fill the holes. Telling us the plan up front means the site is left ready for what comes next.
